Product Description

Here's a great new DVD that doesn't conveniently fit into either of my typical categories - action or instructional. It is by Jonathan Weston, who produced the Maui clasic back in the 80s called Impact Zone. A few snippets on the history of windsurfing have been done before but this is by far the most comprehensive and serious effort. And putting something together like this is a serious effort. Since Jonathan was shooting windsurfing with video and 16mm film more than anyone during windsurfing's heyday he's probably the only guy who could pull something like this off.

It starts at the beginning and thoroughly covers the one-design racing and freestyle era, the emergence of World Cup racing and shorter boards, the move to Maui, early World Tour days and the evolution of wavesaling through the 80s and 90s. There is some modern footage but the emphasis is on the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Interspersed throughout all the eras are profiles on the many movers and shakers of the sport.

This will definitely appeal to any long-time windsurfer (and guaging by the footage in the original Windsurfer days, there used to be a lot of them), and will probably be the highlight video for Christmas. But I'm not sure the 20 year-old freestyle dude will relate to it, even though they should...dang whippersnappers.
